I found this site while researching Bourne (pictures and articles). I am looking for information on Henry Osborn Bland, born in Bourne, 28 February 1845 to James Osborn and Esther Bland (common-law relationship until 1862). The last record I have of him in the 1891 census where he, a widower, was living with his mother in Bourne, and working as a ganger (not sure what that means). Henry's son, Harry (born 5 April 1879 to Henry Bland and Sarah Ann Miller in Bourne) was also living with them in 1891. Family tradition says Harry was a veteran of the Boer War (I haven't been able to find any proof of this). Sometime between 1894 (when Esther died) and 1907 Harry and Henry came to Canada. Again, I can't find record of their leaving England or landing in Canada, but I know they arrived here because Harry married Annie Walker, 25 December 1907 here in Alberta. I would appreciate any information on where they were in those 'lost years', did Harry serve in the Boer War, when did they leave England, what ship did they sail on etc. etc. Editor's Note: Do you have a query about your Ancestors? Reply received from another source:- Have you tried this site, it's very good, although I had a quick look for you and couldn't find him but there are other variations of the spelling of a Bland and could have been mis-spelt. I suppose he also could be under the name of Osbourn!! 1901 and 1906 census site for Canada. (http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html) Hope this helps anyway. |

It is perhaps not a surprise that I am interested in this as well! I add a few clarifying facts. James and Esther did eventually tie the knot at Bourne on 28 April 1862 some 20 plus years after first meeting. Witnesses were Charles PHILLIPS and Marianne WATERS. Henry Osborn BLAND married Sarah MILLER at Bourne on 11 March 1873 . Witnesses were Thomas MILLER and Caroline Eliza ASHLING. Sarah died on 7 November 1881 in tragic circumstances after the death of twin sons born two days earlier. The 1891 census shows that Henry is shown as an employer. I feel that this is the same as today's Gangmaster. i.e. someone who acts as a head for a group of workers (probably Agricultural) and canvasses the local farms for work, arranges transport and distributes the wages. His departure to Canada is a bit of a mystery seeing as he was not a young man. It is definately the same man as the marriage certificate shows that Harry was born at Bourn, England. His bride, Annie WALKER was born at Coalville, UTAH, USA and the marriage was in Taber, ALBERTA on 25 December 1907. This begs the question whether Henry and family actually went to the US first and then onto Canada. Maybe listers in the New World can advise whether there are any records of migrations from USA to Canada. Were such movements commonplace in the early C20th? As I have not had any experience of hunting for departures from the UK, I am not sure where to look. I do feel that a search of Voter's lists (if they survive) may help narrow down the date. My own feeling is that Henry left after his mother died in 1894, as the 1891 census shows him at home with his three youngest Louisa b 19 December 1875, Kate b 30 September 1877 and Henry b 5 April 1879. It is not known whether the girls also went to Canada/ USA They are not on the 1901 census, but they could have married by then, in which case it would not be that easy to find them, without the marriage details. If anyone can shed any further light on Henry's travels or can advise whether the girls married, I would also be interested in the results. A lot of work has been carried out over the last year piecing the Osborn Bland family together, which I am happy to share if anyone thinks they may have one in their Tree. |

I have just started to do a bit of research into my ancestrial path. So far I have no information but would very much like to be kept up to date with anyone else searching for the name Bland in the UK, specifically around the Luton, Bedfordshire area or Northamptonshire. The reason I have made a post here is because to date my father still has uncles and cousins in Canada! (Any link maybe?) Richard, son of David Bland, grand son of Maureen and Arthur Bland.
