Does anyone know of any good resources online on house history as I'm trying to see who lives at my g g grandfathers old house on Casterton Road, Stamford. Thanks
Kate: Can anyone suggest a site to help Paul?  This would also be useful to others.  I found one by googling -
www.tracesmart.co.uk
This lists electoral rolls etc.

Indeed Judy is a connection for me. Have exchanged some interesting stories including a relative connected to us called John Cole Reedman who played cricket for Australia in the Ashes v England in the 19th century.
Kate:  Thanks Paul.  Always pleased to hear from you.

Hi Paul, I was born in a house on Casterton Road and lived there until I was 29 years old - from 1964 to 1993. For the first 8 years I lived at 97, Casterton Road which was built around 1962. However, in 1972 we moved to 12,Casterton Road which is fairly near the bottom of the road on the right hand side if you are leaving Stamford. This house was built around 1906. As you are probably looking at a house of some age I am assuming the Reedman's House is in the lower part of Casterton Road. I would be able to tell you virtually all the residents in the lower half of Casterton Road and probably history of the house occupants since the 1960's. I could also ask my parents who are old Stamfordians and seem to remember who has lived in most of the older houses in town.
You might be interested to know that Stamford Library holds most of the old Dolby's Directories which I believe go back to the early 1900s if not earlier. An update was printed about every 2 years and listed all the streets/roads in town and all the occupant names of each house. Spiegels Printers continued to produce a similar book in the 70s and 80s and most are held in the library but you have to ask to see them. However, if you want current information on house occupants I believe the only official method now is to obtain the Electoral Roll from the local council. But if you give me the number in Casterton Road where your GG Grandparents lived and I may well be able to tell you the name of the current occupants.

Hi Andrew. My GG Grandad Ben Reedman lived at 45 Casterton Road with his son Ernest. Ben died there in 1933 and Ernest must have lived there on his own after Ben died as I have no record of him getting married or having kids. This is the last known date I know Ernest lived from as I've been unable to find the date of his death. If you can help to find out how long he lived there that would be great. I know little of uncle ernie as everyone used to call him but I do have his pocket watch which is now a family heirloom.
I remember passing number 45 on my visits to Stamford as it's right opposite the cemetery but was always to scared to knock on the door.
Look forward to hearing from you. Paul

Hi Paul, I have a copy of an old Dolby's Directory from 1964 and it lists a Mr E E Reedman living at No 45, Casterton Road, so he was still there at that time. However, the next book I have is a Spiegel's Directory from 1978 which lists a Mr and Mrs S Hacher living there. So he must have died some time between 1964 and 1978, that is if he didn't move or go into a residential home. The house was further occupied by a Mr and Mrs Jones in 1984. I will try to get you some more up to date information for 45, Casterton Road. Also, when I am next in Stamford Library I will look at the Dolby's Directories for the years between 1964 and 1978 and let you know when his name ceases to be listed. If I have time I'll try to cross refer that info with the Stamford Mercurys that are on microfiche in the library and check the death lists to see if I can get you some more accurate information on the date of his death. Regards, Andy.

Thanks Andrew. You've been a huge help. He would have been in his 80's in the 1960's so it looks like he's had a good innings. Thanks again
