I have found the Parish Records held by the Family History Societies very useful.  Some of the Societies have CDs of the records and you can buy these for about £12 - £16 direct from the Society.  These contain births, marriages and deaths in a group of villages and hamlets and are very interesting to trawl through for the name of your ancestor.  If you have located a particular ancestor, you can search backwards to find the marriage of their parents, and if they stayed in that area you may be lucky and find the births of one or even both parents.  This would then lead  in turn to finding their parents.  The records are prior to 1837 and give witnesses names to marriages which can also reveal other members of the family.  I obtained a CD from Oxford Family History Society and it helped me trace the family I was researching. You just slot the CD into your computer and the info comes up on your monitor.
Why don't you have a go?  Anyone else found this resource useful?
