So nobody has a car they wished they'd kept-well I did. In the early sixties I had a Ford Zephyr Convertible RBY5 which I wish I still had. There were a few of us who went about together with similar cars. Chris Nottingham, his cousin Dave ?, Johnny Mason & myself all with convertibles & Bernard Mason with a Zephyr saloon spring to mind. In 2005 I bought a 1962 Zephyr saloon to refurbish so I could relive my youth. After 750 hours work it is now an award winner & I am in my element. All that is missing is being able to park in Red Lion Square with the rest of the gang as we used to do. Kate: How interesting John! Loads of people will be interested in this. I wonder if any of that original group will see this posting?( This stuff gets picked up in about 50 countries across the world and entering some of the items in google brings up ancestorgateway.com ) You would not be able to park in Red Lion Square at the moment, due to the "refurbishment" of that area. Do you go to the local car rallies - think there is sometimes one in Burghley Park? Anyone else out there got a vehicle they are proud of? let us know Sadly local shows are a bit of a problem as I live in Scotland. I was only in Stamford in 62/63 while I was in the RAF at Wittering but I still have very fond memories of Stamford. I may be going to the MkII Owners Club Weekend later in the year which is held at Billing near Northampton in which case I will definitely visit Stamford so keep your eyes open for a cream & wine classic Zephyr, & make yourself known to the driver. David February 13, 2007 @ 9:09 PM Reply | Email | Print | Top I do remember seeing these cars in the early 60's around Stamford and occasionally in Ryhall.I remember them as Mk2 models.I think both Zephyrs and Zodiacs. At the time these cars always seemed impressive, there was nothing quite like them in the British range.Very American in style. As I recall there was never a shortage of pretty riders in these vehicles, they were indeed a great "girl magnet". I believe an old school pal of mine Martin Blowers was aquainted with one of the owners of these cars.(Martin lived at Wittering, his dad owned the grocers shop on the main street entering the base). Would I be right in thinking that one of these cars had its spare wheel in a pod mounted verticaly behind the boot? An another note. Around this time a very large American car appeared on Stamford streets. If I remember rightly a Mr Musgrove who owned Musgrove transport located at that time between Castle st and Bath Row, treated himself to a sparkling new Chevrolet Impala convertible. These cars were the at the peak of "The fins and acres and acres of chrome period".He would have everyones attention as he attempted to shoehorn this behemoth around Stamford streets. If they do I hope they will send a posting - even if just to say they remember. I doubt if the owners realised the impact of their cars would be lasting all these years. |

hi we all sell things we wish we kept. My dad sold his maroon mk2 ford zephyr reg 990 CLE and we hope to track it down. Kate: Hi Allan. I think you can put in a query on some of the motoring sites (using google) to track old car numbers. It tells you whether they are still in circulation or whether they are unused at the moment. Some of the sites which sell car numberplates will tell you if its available anywhere or there nearest numberplate to it. I know that's not quite as good as getting the car itself. I tried to track down an old numberplate for a Wolsley car MCT 626 (but could only get MCT627 and it was quite expensive so I settled for a more modern personalised plate. I would have liked to have that MCT 626 - those trips held lots of good memories for me. WONDER IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS IF ALLAN's FORD ZEPHYR CONVERTIBLE 990 CLE is still out there? |
