I spent my early years living at 1 Whincups Yard off Church Street,my parents lived there from 1938 when they married. The house was formerly part of the big house on the corner with Back Street/Wothorpe Rd and may have been servants quarters.Like many properties it belonged to the Burghley Estate, the rooms were spread over several floors with cellar up to scullery up to toilet up to living room and on up to bedrooms. No bathroom, gas lighting downstairs only -It is now a Townhouse!! I remember a close community of lovely people, some of the family names are Bell,Sargeant,Blades,Lock,Smith,Goodchild,Yates,Walpole,Cunnington,Gorman,Price. Mum bought bread at the bakers on St.Martin's and shopped in Cumberlands on the corner with Water St. My brothers attended  St.Martin's School and we also went to the Sunday School, I started at St.George's and can recall the walk to school and back. We played on the meadows,in Burghley Park, and the football ground and enjoyed the steam trains  and timber yard, as well as the cattle market when I think the animals came in on cattle trucks. There was always so much to see and do, happy times!
