I was lucky enough to see the Queen when she visited Stamford during Quincentenary Year. This was the year when we celebrated the fact that Stamford had been awarded a status of Borough and I think occured in 1963 (not sure if that is the right year?). she was much more tiny than I had thought from seeing her in newsreels at the cinema. She appeared on the Town Hall balcony and the crowds were out there doing lots of flag waving. Ed: Thank you for reminding us of this Julia - does anyone else recall the time and moment when they saw the Queen in Stamford? Let us share your memory. |

I remember the Queen coming - it was 1961. All the schoolchildren were lined up on Stamford School playing field (I think I was on the embankment near the cricket pavilion). The Queen and Duke were driven round as we cheered and waved flags. |

Wow! Someone else remembered the Queen's visit. It was during the Summer term in 1961. I was one of the school kids on the embankment on the Stamford School playing field. The Queen and the Duke were standing in the back of a Land Rover, which had no number plate! Later, we moved to the junction of Tinwell Road and Roman Bank and stood on the wall of the house there. She wizzed past in her Rolls Royce. |

Can anyone else remember the large concert given by the local children in the Stamford Grammar School Hall during the Quincentenery Celebrations? I think we practiced for many weeks and sang Who Is Sylvia till I think we probably Knew her very well. There was a conductor and he insisted on every note being just so. We also sang Jerusalem and many others. I think we all felt very proud to be part of such an occasion. |

The Queen also travelled around the town, she came down Kesteven Road, Lincoln Road and past Blackstones. All the workers were allowed to stand outside to watch them pass. I remember she was so tiny. |

Yes Richard, I do remember that concert, didn't we also sing Schubert's "The Trout"? I also remember walking up to Exeter School for rehearsals. |

Stood in Station Road and watch her riding with the Chief Constable of Lincolnshire (or Cambridgeshire) in an open Austin A90 "Atlantic" on her way back to the Royal train. It seemed to be travelling so fast, if you had blinked you would have missed her! Besides the great honour to the town, I would think from a rail enthusiasts viewpoint, however, it must have been the first time an A4 class streamlined pacific which was hauling her train had ever visited Stamford! |

I remember being stood outside the International Stores in St John's Street with a girl called Frances Stallwood(who was the cashier there)to see the Queen.They drove by slowly, the pavements were packed.A happy day for everyone.The A 4 mentioned by the previous writer was 60003 Andrew K McCosh seen often on the main line at Essendine but never at Stamford.Fantastic engines!! thanks Phil; did not know the A4 was Andrew K.McCosh. I think it's namesake was a director of the old LNER company and it was a New England based loco at the time. |

In 1961, 60003 was still shedded at Kings Cross. The A4's were moved from Kings Cross to New England on cessation of steam working south of Peterborough, about three years after the royal visit. 60003 worked the royal train all the way to Kings Cross. Tucked away quietly near the old east station on the evening of the queen's visit, just in case, was A3 pacific 60067 Ladas. To the best of my knowledge, unless anyone knows better, the day of the queen's visit was the only time both an A3 and an A4 visited Stamford. |

Hi-Kate, last year when the Town Hall held their open days I was on duty helping in various ways with the many visitors that attended. In the Court Room we had on display numerous old photo albums that had been taken out of our archives. When looking through these various albums I found a rather large album that was full of the Queen's Visit to Stamford. Within it were photos of almost every area of Stamford and its street that the Queen visited during the day. Nearly every page of photos I looked at I recognised various local individuals in the crowds. Low and behold as I flicked over one page there was a photo of myself and Pamela (my wife) standing outside the old "Burton's" shop in High Street enjoying the Queen's Visit. Other albums on display had local:-Schools:-Factories:-Sports days:-Parties:-Civic functions:- Some of these albums date back to the 1930s. Most of these photos may have been taken by the Mercury at the time when they visited these various functions and events, "perhaps by request of the Old Stamford Borough Council"? However I have never seen so many old photos s with faces of those I recognise This year when the Town Hall has its open days I would recommend others pay a visit, Its FREE, and very interesting. I was lucky enough to be presented to the Queen on Stamford School Playing Fields representing the Fane School in 1961. I wasn't very tall in those days and the Duke of Edinburgh asked me what I wanted to be when I "grew up". I replied,"a commando!" He just laughed. |

I can just remember this occasion, being nine at the time. Our family had just moved to Stamford (My Dad getting a job with Bowman's being the reason for our move) from Norfolk in 1961, and I can remember the Queen coming down Lincoln Road in the "Big Car" and all the people lining the street. |

Like some of the others on this forum, I remember waving my flag for the Queen's visit outside the Stamford School Playing fields entrance. I was shown on the national tv coverage the same evening, but have never seen the footage since then - there were no pvrs to record the event in the 1960s! |
