More Detail! My grandfather was Bill Griffith. It happened at 4.30pm on Oct 31 1940. A German bomber dropped a 500lb bomb which hit the chimney of No2 cornstall buildings. It deflected thro my grandfathers house (17 Cornstall buildings) and ended up in the coal bunker. My grandmother (Elsie) and my aunt (Doreen), who was a toddler, were in the house at the time. They were unhurt amazingly tho it would have been different had the device exploded! My father (Michael) was at school at the time and my grandfather at work but as he was a volunteer fireman at the time he was one of the first on the scene. It wasn't removed until nov3. There have been many occasions when this story has appeared in the Mercury along with a picture of the bomb and the man who disposed it,one article interviewed my grandfather about it when he was in his 80s. It has also appeared in several local books about Stamford. Hope this helps shed some light on the incident.

To add to my brothers story of the 'Bomb'. Stamford Museum recorded some oral histories from local people sometime in the 1980's.My Grandparents recalled the time the bomb dropped on their home. Grandma,s account was the most interesting as she had never told me her side of the story! Grandad also recalled seeing a Zepplin going overhead when he lived in Melborne Road.

I lived at 52b St.Leonards St. with my adopted grandparents Chris Martin and his wife between 1943 and 1946 .I knew Michael Grifith and Trevor Lawrence who lived in Cornstall Builldings we all played together at this time .Michael's father was the local window cleaner in the area ,he owned a austin 7 at this time which I went for a ride with his family some times . The two houses 52a and b were owned by my grandfather [Collins] and also he owned the Carpenters Arms next door and the Brewery Inn around the 1920'.I left Stamford late 1946 and moved to Northampton and still go to Stamford quite often.
