I used to like going into Browns seed merchants in the High Street.  It was near where Dixons is now.  When you walked in the door it had a smell of seeds and plants.  It had a rack of drawers  behind the counter and they were all labelled with different seed names.  You could ask for a certain seed, say purple globe beetroot, and say quarter of an ounce and the assistant would use a scoop to get some of the seed from the drawer.  She would then weigh the seed and tip them from the scales into a small envelope and write on the envelope what seeds they were.
Editor:  Yes I remember Browns Brenda, it was one of my favourite shops too.  Flanders in Scotgate was also good and a family run business with Mrs Flanders serving in the shop and the Nursery in Casterton Road (where Vence Close now is).  Her son, I think, Newton Flanders) correct me if I am wrong, running the Nursery next to Casterton House.

Newton Flanders, used to run a flower shop scotgate  which is now a asian resturant (sorry can't remember the name), Newton and my dad used to play golf together on a sunday, and drink in the bull and swan, and my brother used to go out with one of his relatives.  I remember them and the shop well.
Kate: Thanks Margaret.  Yes the shop is now a restaurant - I think called Bombay Cottage.  I can remember Mrs Flanders serving in there I used to get the packets of seeds  for my Dad.

I can also well remember the smell of lawn seed going into Brown's on the High Street, and the seed drawers.  There is some interesting history of the shop at http://scog.org.uk/?page_id=601 dating back to 1845.

Does anyone have any photos of Browns (56 High Street) for the website?

Thanks Rog.  Had a look at the Browns info.Very interesting.  Also cider brewing info.
