I attended the Bluecoat School when it was in All Saints' Street from 1950 to 1954. I remember that all the textbooks were ancient. I think most of them must have dated from the 19th century. The appalling songs books they had most certainly were from the Victorian era. Whenever we had music lessons we learnt nothing about music. We just sang those ancient folk song over and over again for four solid years. Incredibly I think all the teachers played piano. But the only music we were ever exposed to at school was hymns and the songs from this awful song book. It was as though popular songs, proper classical musical and musicals didn't exit. The songs in the book included- Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes, The British Grenadiers, Dye Ken John Peel, Here's a Health unto his Majesty. Greensleeves, Lillibulero, Admiral Benbow the Sailor etc. Even today I can't bear to hear any of those songs without cringing. Anyone else share my memories? |

30 or so years later - at a different Bluecoat on Green Lane - we used to have singing on a Thursday morning for about an hour after assembly. The wonderful Mr Beddows presided over events. He was a very good singer, and had a wonderful way of getting you to do as you were told. "Stand up straight boy. SING!" "Stop talking at the back or I will tear you limb from limb." Really a bark much worse than his bite sort of bloke. But what a bark! We all liked him - but were a bit scared too. He did like "Jerusalem" though making us re-sing verse after verse. "BRING ME MY CHAAAAA-REEEE-OTTT OF FIRE....." No, not right, sing it again until we get it right, time after time, after time, after time.......You get the picture. One day my friend fainted. It was great, I got to sit with him and missed out on the rest of singing practice. Happy memories of a great school and a great teacher. |

I remember the same songs between 1956 and 1960. At one lesson we were separated into 'Tunefull' and 'Growlers'......I, amounst others, was classified as the latter and had to sit and not sing!! |
