There was a bakery on Scotgate (odd number side) in the early 80s. It might be the barber shop Mimmo's now but I am not sure. Anyone remember it? It was run by Ron Wade.

It was Harveys in the 1950s and 1960s then became Gurneys.

Ken Ford 'Who Traded Where' (2003) records
24 Scotgate. This shop was a bakery for over 100 years. George Groom, a baker and flour dealer, started here in the 1830s. Alfred Harvey was here by 1900. The Harvey family traded here until the 1970s when another baker R.A.Gurney took over the business. He continued here for some years. (Nimrod is at No.27).1

Steve Earl's memory is better than mine! When the Gurneys left the bakery it became The Stamford Lodge Guest House. Nimmos, as a matter of interest, took over from Felix Vines. I remember the name but never had a haircut with him. I went to 'Stibby' Barrett at No:60 which was demolished in the 1960s.

Patrick, surely it was Timmy Garratt at number 60.

Hi Sid, Sorry. Barrett was a typo. He is in the Directory as William Garrett. I expect you are also right about his name. We knew him as 'Stibby' but, of course, we called him Mr. Garrett when we went for a haircut

It was W H "Bill" Garrett at No.60. When No. 60 was demolished, he moved to No. 8 Scotgate. Although Dolby's Directory says "Garratt", I think Ken Ford is correct with "Garrett"
R A Gurney had taken over from Harveys at No. 24 by 1969, and the hairdresser who took over from Felix Vines at No. 27 was "Mimmos".
As well as some factual errors, Ken Ford's book has many typos.
