Not really a Stamford topic as it concerns something a few miles from the town, but does anyone remember a hermit who lived in Tallington Meadows during the early 1950s?
We came across him when I was a small child while blackberrying with the family. He was a very smartly dressed man - nothing at all like a tramp or anyone who had been sleeping rough. His "home" had been created in the centre of a large bush/small tree in the meadow between Tallington and Uffington. It was sparsely furnished - just a table and chair and little else. I don't know if he was a former Navy man but I believe he slung a hammock between two trees for sleeping.
Apparently he was quite a well known person in the locality but I haven't heard him spoken of for  decades. Can anyone else shed any more light?
NB: It wasn't Nimpy Holmes or anyone like him!
