I was asked recently by a visitor why Maiden Lane is so named. I had to say I didn't know. Does anybody know the reason, please?

I was born and lived in Maiden Lane until 1987, so became curious about the name myself. It is, so I understand, a polite re-naming from an earlier time (I think the 16th-17th centuries) when it was known as "Midden Lane" (obviously not a very important thoroughfare then, although it possessed at least one important late-mediaeval building, Digby House). In the Middle Ages it was known as Cornewansty: no-one has been able to establish why...
