My grandfather was the confectioner and tobacconist at 5 St Mary's Hill in the 50s and 60s when I was a young boy. He had the shop and residence behind the shop where he, my grandmother and my aunt lived. My brother and I would go there every sunday for dinner and tea and were allowed 2/6 (two shillings and sixpence - 12.5 p) to spend on sweets each week. Every November my grandfather would dress one of the windows with a guy and advertise his selection of Benwells fireworks. In the summer we would all go for picnics in the car and they even had a tv in the late 50s! When he retired from shop-keeping Cox's took over the premises as an antiques dealer, they gutted the shop and back store room and found a very old oak doorframe between the two which they kept as a feature. |

No 3 St Mary's Hill was the Boat and Railway pub before it closed and was occupied by Pipeman Ploughing Ltd. The back garden at 5 St Mary's Hill had a lawn with rose borders around it, there was an outside loo too. Me and my brothers would play cricket on the lawn in the summer. There were 4 big old apple trees that always had a big crop of apples at the end of summer. My grandfather had a vegetable gardening the back of the dentists next door and we would fish off the wall that was always covered with virginia creeper that had at least one nest of kingfishers. |

Just to add to the list of proprietors of these premises, no. 37. GODSLAND was managed by Howard Mulligan in the 70's, who was also the manager of the Riverside Club in Wharf Road. YE OLDE BARN RESTAURANT & COFFEE BAR was owned by Mr McKecknie, and his wife had the Wimpy Bar franchise in Red Lion Street. |

Hi Peter, If I remember correctly wasn't Godsland's also known at one time as Mulligan and James ? I think Howard Mulligan went into partnership with Mr James the father of golfer and one time captain of the European Ryder Cup team Mark James. |

Sounds very likely Derek, I recall them being friends back in the 70's/early 80's. |
