And there were an incredibly high number of ladies in the town who were unmarried - spinsters or widows. I realise now, of course, that this was all a legacy of the First World War. The men had been badly wounded at the front and the women were the wives and girlfriends of young men who had been killed in action. It seems incredible that such a small market town like Stamford should have known such suffering.
