I am no talking about the war here - I am too young for that - but does anyone remember when Stamford used to be plunged into darkness during the small hours?
I have a recollection of this from my brief time in the town during my childhood from 1979 to 1982.All the street lights used to go out late at night. I remember my Dad taking me out once to show me what blackout was like.
Was this some early eco-friendly policy, or just a change to save money? I guess it doesn't happen now. When did they stop doing it?
These days there'd be concerns about crime, and people falling over with the subsequent legal action.

I think this was the case in many towns until 1980s/90s. Sometimes on main roads alternate lights would be left on though.

Did't the lights also go out during Ted Heath's infamous three day week during his premiership? I seem to recall we had a home "emergency kit" comprising an oil lamp, water container, torch and Camping Gaz portable cooker etc for when the power went down.

The street lights in my street would go off at midnight. Fortunately these days they stay on all night.
I remember the lights being out during the three day week in the 70s but wasn't that because of the power cuts we had? I was at school and can't remember how it affected life in general.

I read somewhere that due to the evening power cuts in 1974, throughout the country, there was an increase in the birth rate!
