Does anyone else remember "Yorkie" and other popular Daniels players of the immediate postwar years.
Diminutive and blond-haired, Yorkie (I think his full name was name was Les York) was the fans favourite at Wothorpe Road in the late 40s and early 1950s. He was a natural winger but was sometimes used as a full back. But he was never a defensive player. If played in defence he would join in the attack at every opportunity. I guess he was probably the country's very first wing back. I remember the crowd used to get excited and cheer whenever Yorkie was on the ball.
I don't know where the Stamford Town FC players came from in those days but I don't think many of them were local.
The only local person I can remember playing for the Daniels during the fifties was gasman John Sharp who lived in Rutland Road,
