50 years later, how many of the shops still trade?

Hi
I spent my teenage years in Stamford High Street especially on a Saturday afternoon and can remember all of the shops listed. I recall Eayres grocers on the high street as my aunt worked there. You could buy cheeses cut from the rounds and wrapped in greaseproof paper and sugars was also sold loose and wrapped in blue sugar paper! I did an early morning paper round for Warners next to St Michael's church and had to go there every Saturday morning to collect my wages, eleven shillings a week (55p today). There was a lot of talk about what to do with St Michael's church before it was finally converted to shops.

Hi again.
You list Wymans who took over Warners the newsagents and printers. The list also shows a Boots Chemists in town that was originally Timothy Whites. There was traffic allowed down the High Street in the 60s and I learnt to drive in 1967. You drove down the High Street and if there was a policeman on traffic duty you had to stop outside Boots until you were waved through to the Square or Red Lion Street.

I think the manager of Taylors Cash Chemists was Mr Daccus M.P.S. (Member of the Pharmaceutical Society)

My late uncle Harold Banks was a "Special" and usually was on point duty in the square on a Saturday afternoon acting in a very professional manner clad in his uniform with white cuffs and gloves.

Hi,
I seem to remember a shop called Eayres the grocers somewhere in the town, but for the life of me cannot remember exactly where the shop stood.
Could you help out with this one please ?
Thanks.

I think it may have been two shops towards Red Lion Square from the Maypole grocers and before Burtons with the Billiard Hall on the 1st floor. Then there was the I was the bookshop in the 80's and 90's I think. I remember Drapers and then Duncombs but I can't remember exactly where Earyes shop was. Next time I visit Stamford I will have to look around the area to see if I can remember.

Derek, Eayrs were at No. 8, In 1968 International Stores took over the shop completely refitting it and extending it slightly. They subsequently closed their other shops at 14 High Street and St Johns Street

I think you will find Eayres was in the High Street almost opposite Dolbys. It was a grocers which sold most of the food weighed in front of you. Super in the strong blue bag.
