In Britain, 1918 saw ration books for butter, margarine, lard, meat and sugar introduced and women aged 30 years and above given the right to vote. It was also the year that would see the end of the First World War. Total lives lost during the Great War would amount to over 18 million and if that was not enough, the world would suffer even more misery during the next two years from the influenza pandemic that circled the globe killing an estimated total of between 30 to 50 million people. Going back to the horrors of that period in time 99 years ago, these are the shops and businesses you would have seen when you visited the High Street.
