I, along with most older Stamford residents, have always called Cheyne Lane CHAINEE LANE.
But I have now discovered that the correct pronunciation of Cheyne is CHAIN. So we should have been calling it CHAIN LANE all along.
Apparently CHEYNE is a medieval French word for Oak Wood. So it may well be that the name means Oak Wood Lane. Did the lane lead to an Oak Wood in medieval times?
However, there have been many famous people with the surname Cheyne, including a Speaker of the Houses of Parliament. So it is possible the lane was named after someone rather than something. Anyone else have any other ideas?

During the early 1950s there was a well known pop song recorded by Dean Martin (and others) called The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane.
But in Stamford, as kids, we used to sing "The Naughty Lady of Cheyne (Chainee) Lane"
