Some of the news making the headlines during this period in time saw Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali win his first professional fight in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Beeching issue a report calling for huge cuts to the UK's rail network. U.S. President John F. Kennedy shot dead in Dallas. Murderers Gwynne Owen Evans and Peter Anthony Allen become the last people to be executed in the United Kingdom and a landslide devastate the town of Aberfan in South Wales killing a total of 144 people with 116 of the victims being children aged between seven and ten.
In local news 1961 saw the opening of the Stamford bypass.
