Kate:  See John's posting next one down. Kate:  Do you have memories of a car you once owned?  Was it your pride and joy?  Do you wish you hadn't parted with it?  Or was it a trip you went on?  Post it to this forum and we will also add it to the ME AND MY CAR FORUM.

So nobody has a car they wished they'd kept-well I did. In the early sixties I had a Ford Zephyr Convertible RBY5 which I wish I still had. There were a few of us who went about together with similar cars. Chris Nottingham, his cousin Dave ?, Johnny Mason & myself all with convertibles & Bernard Mason with a Zephyr saloon spring to mind. In 2005 I bought a 1962 Zephyr saloon to refurbish so I could relive my youth. After 750 hours work it is now an award winner & I am in my element. All that is missing is being able to park in Red Lion Square with the rest of the gang as we used to do.
Kate:  How interesting John!  Loads of people will be interested in this.
I wonder if any of that original group will see this posting?( This stuff gets picked up in about 50 countries across the world and entering some of the items in google brings up ancestorgateway.com for instance, if you put Nimpy Holmes into google it comes up with the site and our reference to Nimpy  - amazing or what? - sorry, I digress I'm so amazed at the brilliance of it to think that someone in Oz who remembers Nimpy could go straight to  our Stamford Memories Gateway stuff ) You would not be able to park in Red Lion Square at the moment, due to the "refurbishment" of that area.  Do you go to the local car rallies - think there is sometimes one in Burghley Park?
Anyone else out there got a vehicle  they are proud of?  let us know.  It will go to the world.

Sadly local shows are a bit of a problem as I live in Scotland. I was only in Stamford in 62/63 while I was in the RAF at Wittering but I still have very fond memories of Stamford. I may be going to the MkII Owners Club Weekend later in the year which is held at Billing near Northampton in which case I will definitely visit Stamford so keep your eyes open for a cream & wine classic Zephyr, & make yourself known to the driver.
Kate:  Thanks John.  I hadn't realised you were living in Scotland.  I wonder how you picked up the site?  Probably googled Stamford or something about car enthusiasts?

I do remember seeing these cars in the early 60's around Stamford and occasionally in Ryhall.I remember them as Mk2 models.I think both Zephyrs and Zodiacs.  At the time these cars always seemed impressive, there was nothing quite like them in the British range.Very American in style.  As I recall there was never a shortage of pretty riders in these vehicles, they were indeed a great "girl magnet".
I believe an old school pal of mine Martin Blowers was aquainted with one of the owners of these cars.(Martin lived at Wittering, his dad owned the grocers shop on the main street entering the base).
Would I be right in thinking that one of these cars had its spare wheel in a pod mounted verticaly behind the boot?
An another note. Around this time a very large American car appeared on Stamford streets. If I remember rightly a Mr Musgrove who owned Musgrove transport located at that time between Castle st and Bath Row, treated himself to a sparkling new Chevrolet Impala convertible.  These cars were the at the peak of "The fins and acres and acres of chrome period".He would have everyones attention as he attempted to shoehorn this behemoth around Stamford streets.
Kate:  Thanks very much for that David.  Its bringing back images of those cars and I am sure many people will be going "oh yes!  I remember that".  If they do I hope they will send a posting - even if just to say they remember.  I doubt if the owners realised the impact of their cars would be lasting all these years.

Hi,Kate. David is quite correct. One of the gang did have the spare wheel on the back in a cover-what was called a Continental spare wheel conversion. That was Dave ? whose surname I can't remember, only that he was Chris Nottingham's cousin(I think-44 years old memories) I think Martin was a friend of Chris's who also came from Wittering-Chris's dad had the farm behind the RAF station. Chris's car was black, Dave's was two tone green & a light colour, mine was blue & white, & Johnny Masons was white(eventually white & red).
There was also an American car owned by someone in Northumberland Avenue which had leopard skin seat covers & was driven by a blond lady.
Kate:  Thanks for that John - we are getting the detail we need to make others recall these times and those wonderful cars.  If I get some photos we could probably get an article in Stamford Mercury.  Can you email me any photos particularly of those original cars but also of your new love (that car you have spent 750 hours cleaning and polishing - must look a treat).  Early photos are sometimes difficult to come by as we didn't have so much access to the camera then and guarded the number of pictures as they cost quite a lot out of our small incomes to have them developed.

Hi Kate, I do have photos of my original car but only in black & white(scanned onto the computer so would email) I even have one with me on at the tender age of 21. If you email me direct I will email them to you as I don't think this system has the facility for attachments.
Kate:  Thanks John.  I will contact you off Forum.

Musgrove cars
by kind permission of Tim Musgrove

my grandfather did buy a brand new chevrolet car in 1961, a story on it was featured in the merecury at the time, with the reporter having a ride in it and stating it was "like riding on air".

it was blue and white in colour and at the time was of a style that was  less fins and chrome than some of the earlier american cars. it was supplied through forsyth and ferriers . this car actually replaced his buick roadmaster -  another american car. i do have photos of both of these vehicles with one of the chevy in colour.
the chevy was still around stamford until the early seventies as one of the haulage companies lorry drivers purchased it . last I know it was converted into a custom car which sadly caught fire and no longer exists

its reg no was AFP 523

Kate: Hello Tim - and thanks very much for your first hand information.
As you may have seen, The Mercury printed John's story about his Ford car and the info about  your grandfather and his  car which was added by David,  in the Mercury this week.  I would very much like to see the photos of the cars and also be very nice if you have one of your grandfather with (or without) one or other of the  cars.  Can you email me a copy of the photos?  Hope so.  Thanks again.

Hello John.  The Mercury printed a full page of our item ME AND MY CAR in the Mercury this week.  If you send me your postal address through my usual email I will send you the full page copy.  They have printed the photo of you and also of your "new" car.

Nice to see that the topic "Me and my car" culminated the way it did. I never thought in a million years I would be discussing events that happened in 1960's Stamford.
It was most appropriate that a member of the Musgrove family would "pop up" to fill the gaps and add the required authenticity. Incidentally I was acquainted with one of the Musgrove family at that time. His name was Jake and he was certainly part of the Stamford scene at that time. Jake also had a couple of sisters if I remember rightly.
It would be interesting to read the Mercury article, but unfortunately it does not appear on the free online version of the paper.
Kate: Hello David.  Yes, it is good that Stamford Memories Gateway managed to get  together several of those involved and your contribution reminded many of Mr Musgrove and his car.  As you say, Tim brought his own personal memories with mention of its forerunner the Buick roadmaster and the car dealership involved in the purchase of the Chevrolet.    I will send you a copy of the full page article if you let me have your postal address via my off-forum  email address .  If not, then I think the Mercury article will come up on-line in a week or two.  Think they keep it back while that copy of the Mercury is still being bought.  I hope we shall get more contributions to this topic as we go along.  Thanks again.

hi we all sell things we wish we kept. My dad sold his maroon mk2 ford zephyr reg 990 CLE   and we hope to track it down.
Kate: Hi Allan.  I think you can put in a query on some of the motoring sites (using google) to track old car numbers.  It tells you whether they are still in circulation or whether they are unused at the moment.  Some of the sites which sell car numberplates will tell you if its available anywhere or there nearest numberplate to it.  I know that's not quite as good as getting the car itself.  I tried to track down an old numberplate for a Wolsley car MCT 626 (but could only get MCT627 and it was quite expensive so I settled for a more modern personalised plate.  I would have liked to have that MCT 626 - those trips held lots of good memories for me.  WONDER IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS IF ALLAN's FORD ZEPHYR CONVERTIBLE  990 CLE is still out there?

Hi Kate, Did you manage to get the article from the Mercury? I have tried looking on line but can't find anything & it's not possible to subscribe for back numbers. I would be happy to reimburse you for any outlay. Kind regards,JD.
Kate: Hello John.  I will reply to you off-line.

kate did you get the photos of the american cars i emailed to you

Hello Tim.  No, I didn't receive the photos.  In fact, you have now highlighted a problem with my emails from the site which I hadn't realised - although I hadn't received replies to emails I had sent to people off forum and was beginning to wonder why they hadn't replied.
Thanks very much for making me realise something was wrong.  I am contacting my hosting company on Monday so hopefully it will soon be put right.  The mail to the forum still arrives with me as that is with another provider.  I will post a message back to you when its back working properly and hopefully you wouldn't mind sending the photos again? Thanks again Tim.
Kate:  Hello Tim.  My email external to the site is now working again. fingers crossed.

Hi John.  Thanks for your patience.  Still not sorted, hope it won't be too long now. Kate

Though not 'my' car, does anyone else remember when Roy Pinder drove a Mini across the frozen water of the River Welland. It must have been in the winter of 1961 which was extremely cold! I remember seeing it happen because he drove onto the river rfrom the (now blocked up) Water Street slipway and parked it in the middle of the river opposite the old wharehouses, that in later years housed The Riverside Club.

Anyone recall visiting that great nightclub, managed by Howard Mulligan who went on to open an angling shop in St. Mary's Street?

Wrong thread I suppose, but another well known Stamford personality was the weekend DJ at the Riverside, STC (Stru Cornell),
kate:  Or was that Peter Fancourt crossing the River Peter?

It was so nice to meet up with John again at the Rotary Club vintage  car festival on Stamford Meadows today.  John had emailed me that he was attending - and that he was hoping to meet up again. (I met him for the first time last year).  This year John brought (or rather, it brought him, his Triumph 2000) an excellent vehicle in dark green, with an old metal numberplate.  John informed me that the car had only done 30,000 when he bought it and tempted him to buy.  He has since sold his other vehicles that he has displayed on the meadows on other occasions. John didn't need to do much work to the Triumph as it was in excellent condition when he found it.  The leather seats are comfy, the steering wheel very trendy and he sports loads of chrome at the rear of the vehicle.  He now uses this Triumph as his main form of transport.  He travelled down from Scotland and took a leisurely journey stopping along the way.  In Stamford, he met up with old mates.  He was not impressed with the town centre changes wrought by Stamford Vision and thought the speed of vehicles through the town was unbelieveable even unacceptable.
The duck race arranged by The Rotary Club gave everyone a cliff-hanger, those little ducks did not make much effort but inevitably one of their number had to come first!  2nd and 3rd were also rewarded.
Congratulations to those lucky people.
Rotary Club congratulations on a great show, there was a huge crowd and obviously loads of people who were looking for a Bank Holiday event were so pleased they attended!

Hi Kate, Sorry I haven't been watching the forum-just managed to find time now. Once again a great show organised by the Rotary members. I'm looking forward to this years show & will attend with the new(1960) Ford Zephyr, so look forward to seeing you again. I had a nice meeting with Chris & Hayley Nottingham this year, my first meeting with Chris for 45 years & we just took up where we had left off all those years ago. Best wishes,JD.
Hi John, so good to hear from you.  I was adding some new details for next year's show yesterday and sent the organiser one or two of your postings to the site as he didn't know he had someone coming to the show from Scotland.  I am pleased you enjoyed the show - and it must have been great for you to meet up with your friend Chris from all that time ago.  I look forward to seeing you there again this year - and you've changed your car again!  Lots of polishing to do then!
All the best from Stamford and me Kate.

The CAR  show will be on the August Bank Holiday Sunday - 30th August 2009. Show starts 10am and runs until 4pm field opens at 8:30am and closes (locked gates) at 6pm.

Tim - great pics, brings back happy memories of seeing the blue and white Chevy around town. Incidentally the small caravan (a pink and white Willerby) being towed by the Vauxhall Victor estate was kept at your Uncle Ralph's for several years.
