The replacement co-op shop for the one that used to be in Wilco's, was at the top of High Street.  It had ladies clothing to the left, men's clothing to the right, and on the far right a travel section, where you could book a holiday.  Upstairs was an electrical department, with fridges, cookers, small goods such as irons, toasters, etc and kitchen gadgets.  Also up there was bedding, curtains etc.  To get  to the upstairs you could either walk up or use the lift.
The co-op shop has now closed and a new Marks and Spencer is in the process of being fitted.  We are all waiting to see what this is like when the boards are removed. (Not expected now until OCTOBER)   When I was young we used to wish we had a "Marks" in the town.  Stamford was too small then to warrant one as we had one at Peterborough.  Now we will have  our own at last.
Stamford has grown in size and the population has increased and Marks are  coming  to town.
