Heres a good website that has pictures of Stamford through the early 1900's. Loads of pics to look at including Brownes Hospital and all major town landmarks:

Kate:  Thanks very much for that Paul.  Very interesting.  I notice on photo 4 Freeman Hardy & Willis shoe shop,  where the jewellers now is, and photo 76 "Opticians" which would have  been  Richards opticians.  There are not many cars about in the 1922 pictures and quite a bit of evidence on the roads  of horse-drawn traffic!  Would seem very strange to us now and particularly to the younger generation.  Anyone else spot anything interesting on these photos? Let us know.
