I thoroughly enjoyed watching the filming of Pride and Prejudice in Stamford last year (2004). First of all,it was interesting to watch the sets being constructed mainly in St George's Square. The Arts Centre was completely transformed and made to look like shop fronts, with poultry hanging for sale(geese, fowl etc) and bowfronted shop windows replacing the existing facade. An arch was constructed at the end of Maiden Lane near the present Dentists Practice and this was converted to a butcher's stand with all the carcases laid out ready for people to select their cut of meat. It was all very realistic. St George's Churchyard had a flock of sheep in a pen for use later in the film. A troop of soldiers marched up and down on instructions from the Director. The road had been covered with loose material like gravel to cover the tarmac surface. Several top stars were involved - Dame Judi Dench, Donald Sutherland and Kiera Knightley. I am looking forward to seeing the finished film.
Yes, it was exciting Nick. Did anyone else enjoy watching? There were lots of people looking on and also some took part as extras. Were you an extra or did you stand watching the filming? Tell us about it. Ed.

Hi Nick
I was born in Stamford but have lived in New Zealand since 1972 - a long time but I was just browsing through the Stamford Memories Gateway and saw your message about Pride & Prejudice being filmed in Stamford. I saw that version of Pride & Prejudice last week on television and watched it. I thought it a much older version than the one with Colin Firth but I still enjoyed it and would have enjoyed it even more if I had known it was filmed in Stamford. Another BBC classic was Middle March. Did you see that being filmed in Stamford. I've got videos of that and watched with great interest. They filmed much of it apparently around Barn Hill.

Hi Veronica, Much of Middlemarch was filmed in and around Stamford, in St.Gearge's Square, Austin Street,Barn Hill etc. The filming proved exciting at the time with locals taking part in market and hustings scenes.I enjoy watching it, also Pride and Prejudice - it's like having a walk around Stamford.
