Every so often, there would be a dance at the Stamford Hotel.  We girls would get ourselves all dressed up for the evening and arrive in a group.  We would look round for a suitable male partner to dance with. All the girls stood one side of the dance floor and the boys stood at the other side.  However, you could not go over to the boys, you had to wait for one of them to come over and ask you to dance. The standard request was "may I have this dance?"   Some were a bit reluctant to make the journey, as they did not want to get there and then be turned down.  If they asked one girl and she refused they would probably then turn to the one next to her - so that they didn't have to walk back to their friends and get laughed at.  The girls though, did not want to accept a young fellow that their girfriend had just turned down.  The men spent most of the evening in the bar and then emerged about two dances from the end.  They would then have the "last waltz" with someone and ask to walk her home.  It sounds a bit tame but was the most exciting it got!

Hello Joyce

My mother was born and brought up in Stamford (Margaret Eayrs), what were the years to which you refer.
