My aunt and uncle at Oundle (Northamptonshire) took in an evacuee during part of the war years. They had no children of their own and became very fond of this young boy. They took two comics a week for him to read, I think the beano and the dandy. He left after a year or two to go back to his parents and they discouraged any further contact with my aunt and uncle who had treated him like a son. My uncle took the comics for years to come and read them each week. I think they really missed the lad and would like to have kept in touch.
Many families were split up in this way. Have you a story to tell? Editor
