When my Dad was demobbed from the army (1945) he had collected loads of chocolate. He used to buy the coupons off the other soldiers and then get the chocolate to bring home. Unfortunately, when the kit was being off-loaded from the ship, some of the bags ended up in the sea. He dried those items out in a cupboard next to the fire, there were tins of tobacco as well. They never did recover from their dip in the sea but they certainly looked good enough to eat, even though they weren't.
