Every week at St Johns we had to lug to school as much salvage as we could carry.  On the Friday afternoon Miss Boosey would announce the name of the little "hero" who had taken the most salvage for the week and thereupon the Cog in the Wheel lapel badge was awarded!  Another government initiative of the time but despite taking enough old rubbish, pots and pans - you name it, I took it; I never attained the coveted badge!  There must have been warships launched, aircraft built and tanks turned out because of my efforts but no badge.  I ask myself did this sense of underachievement and lack of the badge award affect me in later life?  Would the war have been won by the Allies but for my efforts?
